Gardeners Dream Team crew preparing tools and assessing a garden site Gardeners Dream Team is committed to maintaining a safe and healthy working environment for all members of our gardening crew, contractors and anyone affected by our operations. This policy sets out how the gardeners dream team approaches risk management, hazard control and ongoing safety culture. The purpose is to ensure that every task, from routine lawn care to specialised planting, is planned and executed with the wellbeing of people and protection of property in mind.

We recognise that the safety responsibilities of the Gardeners' Dream Team extend beyond simple compliance: they require active leadership, clear processes and consistently applied standards. Team leaders will demonstrate visible commitment to safety, and all employees are expected to adopt a positive safety mindset. This policy applies to all operations carried out by the garden crew and any temporary workers engaged by the organisation.

Scope and Objectives

The objectives of this Gardeners Dream Team safety policy are to prevent harm, reduce occupational risks and maintain a systematic approach to hazard control. We will: identify hazards; assess and prioritise risks; implement control measures; and review outcomes. The policy supports continuous improvement by promoting reporting, analysis and review of incidents and near-misses without fear of punitive action.

Responsibilities

Management will ensure resources are available for safe operations, including appropriate equipment, training and supervision. Supervisors and team leads are responsible for implementing safety procedures on site, while every gardener must follow safe work practices and use provided protective equipment. Visitors and third-party contractors will be informed of site-specific precautions when onsite.

Key duties include regular risk assessments, documented safe systems of work and ensuring that tools and plant are maintained. The gardeners dream team will keep records of inspections and maintenance, and will not permit the use of defective equipment. Reporting of hazards and unsafe conditions is encouraged and will be treated seriously.

Training and competence are essential. New staff will receive induction covering manual handling, machinery operation, chemical handling and emergency procedures. Ongoing training will reflect changing tasks and seasonal risks, and competence checks will be used to confirm capability for specialised activities.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is provided where necessary and must be used correctly. Items may include gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, high-visibility clothing and protective footwear. The garden crew will be instructed on appropriate selection, fitting and care of PPE to ensure effectiveness during routine and higher-risk tasks.

Safe use of equipment is emphasised. Mechanical devices, cutting tools and powered machinery will be operated only by trained personnel. Equipment will be inspected before use and any faults reported. Lockout procedures will be applied during maintenance to prevent unexpected start-up.

Chemical and environmental controls

The Gardeners Dream Team manages chemicals and plant protection products with care. Substances will be stored, handled and disposed of safely according to manufacturer guidance and sound practice. The team will adopt measures to minimise environmental impact, including correct mixing, application and containment to protect soil and water.

Emergency preparedness is a core component of our safety approach. Emergency plans will be readily available, and staff will be trained in first aid and basic emergency response. Clear procedures for contacting emergency services and evacuating sites will be included in site briefs, and first-aid equipment will be maintained and accessible.

Incident reporting and investigation are used to learn and prevent recurrence. All accidents, near-misses and hazardous occurrences will be reported, recorded and investigated to identify root causes and corrective actions. The garden crew will participate in debriefs to share lessons and update local procedures where necessary.

Health and wellbeing initiatives are supported by the Gardeners Dream Team. Fatigue management, hydration guidance and sun protection form part of our routine safety messaging. Staff are encouraged to raise health concerns promptly to ensure adjustments or support where needed.

Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement

The effectiveness of this policy will be monitored through regular audits, performance reviews and consultation with the team. Safety performance indicators such as incident rates, near-miss reports and audit findings will inform reviews. Annual formal reviews and more frequent updates following significant change or incident ensure the policy remains relevant.

Communication and Consultation

Open communication is essential. The gardening dream team will hold toolbox talks, safety briefings and provide accessible written information so everyone understands their role in maintaining safety. Consultation with employees about changes to procedures or equipment will be standard practice to ensure buy-in and practical risk control.

Commitment: the Gardeners Dream Team policies are backed by leadership at all levels and by participation from the entire workforce. By working together, upholding safe standards and learning from experience, the garden crew will create safer sites, protect wellbeing and deliver quality outdoor work responsibly and sustainably.
